Stressssss!!!

So I knew going self hosted was not going to be easy. Especially when I was on Blogger and wanted to move onto WordPress. I will write more of a post on the process but this just outlines my last week!

IMG_5624

I decided I wanted to go self hosted for a number of reasons that when I look back, are probably crazy:

  • I wanted more flexibility with my blog and kept hearing about all these “plug-ins” that sounded ace.
  • Quite honestly I do like the more professional look that comes with wordpress.
  • I was getting squiffy that Google may just take down my blog for some reason.
  • I like a challenge and I have learnt more about html, css and web design in 3 short days than in my whole life.

So after a recommendation I decided to go with a hosting company called Tsohost which would migrate my blog over for free from blogger to wordpress.

Tip 1 – do not request that this is done on a Friday evening. I did this and as it takes 3 working days at least and I had a mis-communication problem, my blog was not migrated until Thursday. I took a week off writing and linkies (which was lovely) but totally unnecessary. I then got a stomach bug on the Thursday so could do nothing as was a shivery, squitty wreck for 24hrs.

The blog was finally migrated after me going insane and being all twitchy all week waiting.

Then the fun began. With blogger the templates just seemed to work more easily but with wordpress you preview one of the 100s available to you for free and it looks nothing like you want.

Cue stress, cue tearing my hair out and cue my poor husband (who has been amazing) coming in and teaching me a few things (and helping to design my header). I hearnt how to use custom CSS and change fonts and colours. I learnt more about html coding as all my posts from blogger will need reformatting, as the move has made them look wrong.

I have had to seek help from outside with re-direction of my posts. Currently if I search for a post on Google and click on it the link is not complete to tell my browser that I have moved and there is an error message.

BUT!

I am getting there. I have a lot more kinks to iron out but this can be a working progress. I am writing again and have really missed this. It has been a massive challenge. A lot of the work has been like my hubby’s day job so he has helped tonnes and I thank him so much. It’s been hard to rant to anyone else. My Mum thinks I’m a saddo for blogging anyways and hasn’t got a clue!

My blogging buds have been awesome as always. Helen at All the Beautiful Things has got it because basically she is as impatient as me and would have also gone insane. Big thanks to the Mama at Poop Rainbows  (who has also gone self hosted woop!) for hosting Best and Worst last week and coping with the copious amount of messages filled with my whining, stressing and bitching.

I am liking WordPress. I am liking all my plugins and I read a fab post by You Baby Me Mummy on the Top 20 best ones. The duplicate post and calendar ones sound amazing!! A must read if you are clueless like me.

I hope you like my blog so far. It is a working progress and I’m sure it will all be worth it……in the end.

Yay, you did it! Well done on making the jump to self-hosted and hope you get all those little things ironed out – I can imagine just how much harder it is to go from Blogger to WordPress than from free WordPress to self- hosted (which sounds like a breeze in comparison). Love the new blog design (what I can see of it on my phone – look forward to seeing it on the computer later) and glad that you’re back again, missed you last week! Hope you are feeling better now too xx

Well done it’s looking good. I too am on blogger. Can they really shut you down without warning? #mummymonday

    • September 28, 2015 / 12:51 pm

Google owns Blogger and shuts down blogs that breach it’s T&Cs. (See this Guardian article on some music blogs that were closed due to copyright breaches: http://www.theguardian.com/music/2010/feb/11/google-deletes-music-blogs) . But I’m not sure that any hosting service would behave any differently in similar circumstances. That’s one of the reasons it’s important to back up your blog regularly whatever platform you use. (Which reminds me!)

      New layout looks amazing! #bestandworst

Oh Sarah, I know what a complete pain in the arse it is but hopefully you will be so glad you made the switch. I had to play with quite a lot of themes to get one that worked right for me, it’s easy enough to change so you just have to play around with them. It’s trial and error!

I still have loads of blog posts that’s are all formatted all wrong but if ever I have a spare 10 minutes I go back to an archive post and re-format it.

It looks fab Sarah! But reading this I’m soooo glad that I have been on WordPress from the beginning and didn’t have to migrate when I went self hosted!! I am still very nervous about CSS because I get the feeling one wrong move could delete the entire blog… You are also very lucky to have an understanding, techie hubby – I know my husband is completely clueless and he would probably have deliberately deleted the whole thing! Looks great. I have always been wordpress self hosted, so not had to switch. But I am still confused as to why none of the themes ever appear to look like they claim or indeed do any of what it says! My OH just customises them all for me & makes them do what I thought they were going to do! Lucky he is a web developer! Sounds like a nightmare. I used to use Blogger also and didn’t like it at all. I couldn’t even work out how to put pictures on it ha ha! So when I started up again I went with word press and I much prefer it but I know what you mean about choosing a template and then it looks completely different to what you thought. This was my biggest headache. I’ve now been using wordpress since February and I still have no idea how to change fonts or font colour. I have no idea what plug-ins are or css or anything like that so you are already doing much better than me.
