Interior Design Tips No One Tells You – But You’ll Notice If You Ignore Them

Most interior design tips focus on trendy furniture or paint colours. But the details that actually make a home feel polished are often the things people overlook entirely. These may only be small decisions, but they can largely impact how balanced and comfortable a space feels (as well as how much money to spend on it in the first place, and then again, fixing it).

To help you on your journey to updating and redesigning your home, here are some overlooked tips that professionals pay attention to and why they matter more than most homeowners realize.

Light placement, not just light fixtures

Light fixtures are going to make a huge difference to the design of each room, but what is often overlooked is the placement of the light in the first place. The positioning and light temperature can significantly change the design of a room. The last thing you want to do is spend a huge budget on heavy decorative lighting, only to find that the room feels flat after installing it, or the lighting layout is wrong.

One common mistake is the over-reliance on a single overhead light source. This can be too bright and create harsh shadows. You might also find that other parts of the room feel visually empty. A good way to rectify this is to layer lighting at different heights using wall lights, table lamps and floor lamps.

The bulb temperature is also important. Warm lighting can be useful in creating a more relaxed and natural atmosphere, while cool white lighting can unintentionally make interiors feel clinical.

Furniture placement should follow movement, not walls

A common mistake that most homeowners make is using the walls to dictate the layout of the furniture. This might feel like a good idea at first, to create more space, but it often ends up leaving the room feeling more disconnected than anything. Interior designs aim to prioritise movement throughout the room. Then the organisation of the furniture will align with this. They think about how people sit, walk and interact with the space.

Furniture can also be used away from the wall to create a focal point or points of interest to enhance the balance of the room. The completely different design needs to be considered if you have an open-plan home. Furniture is then used to define zones without physical dividers.

Carpet should anchor the room

One of the easiest ways to make a room feel unfinished is by choosing the wrong carpet type, size or colour. Small rugs placed in the middle of a large space, or not in the right place, can make furniture feel scattered and create more disconnection. A properly sized carpet should visually anchor the seating area. The right type of carpet and the appropriate colour can help a room feel larger and more structured. A new carpet is an important decision to make.

The best homes aren’t the ones jam-packed with trends, but the ones that feel the most inviting and personal.
