Tips for How To Exercise on Holidays

Most people think I’m crazy when I tell them I exercise on holidays. Why? It’s a holiday. I’m meant to be stuffing my face and chilling by the pool with a cocktail. It may only be once a year. There are a lot of comments.

It’s true and I still did the above, I promise! My Mum had me walking down to the local marina daily to “get the gremlin to nap”. This was code for “lets get a Sangria”; the most amazing stuff I may add and never before a workout!

The Sangria’s were delicious and very strong!

A holiday can be a massive set back when trying to stick to a healthy diet or exercise plan. People can gain up to a stone in weight on a 2 week break which is a hefty amount and a lot of work on return to shift it. We all now know exercise isn’t the magic bullet in the obesity crisis but it can help with weight maintenance.

I don’t exercise because of that however; more because I enjoy it and it boosts my already good holiday mood. I also don’t tend to go to the gym daily but I do aim to do something active on a daily basis. Some hotels don’t have a gym so it is important to look into what other options are available. You need a good 30 minutes, where you feel out of breath and warm. Some ideas include:

  • A good walk – visit the local town, visit the harbour. Just get out and walk
  • A beach walk – sand is a flipping nightmare to walk on so it’s a harder work out for the legs
  • Swimming – easy peasy. Doesn’t have to be a full 30 minute stint, you can be in and out and the lengths add up
  • Hotel sports – tennis, table tennis, golf, water polo – try and join in and get your daily exercise quota

Exercise can help you relax, sleep and builds a good appetite (especially for all those bigger meals). Don’t knock it and try and to fit some in on your holidays. It will be much easier to continue when you get home and throw in a bit of damage limitation to the holiday pounds.
