One of the best and worst aspects of owning a home is that it’s your responsibility to look after it and add home improvements. The upside is that you get the joy of creating a home that’s designed for your family, with all of your preferences in mind.
Of course, the downside is that home improvements are a lot of work and they cost time, money, and effort. Still, it’s worth looking into constantly improving your home for your own comfort and also to boost the property value of your house.
Install a Fireplace
One big home improvement that should be installed before winter is a fireplace. Depending on the age and history of your property, you might already have a place for an open fire or a log burner, as well as an existing chimney.
In this case, get a builder to check the chimney for structural integrity, and get a chimney sweep to clean the chimney before you light your fire for the first time. This makes sure your fireplace lights cleanly and doesn’t have a high risk of causing an uncontrolled fire in your home.
Another option is to get a gas or electric fireplace. These fireplaces don’t require a chimney and are easier to use. This is especially helpful if you have children or pets that can’t be trusted around open flames.
Get a Security System
Not every home improvement will make an obvious difference to your lifestyle. But it’s still good to think about the safety and security of your home, so you feel more comfortable at night. For this reason, consider looking into a security system that will alert you and the authorities if something happens.
Not only this, but security alarms and systems deter potential trespassers or burglars. Even smart doorbells with cameras are increasingly common and they keep track of people on your property. It’s convenient and safe.
House Extension
Do you have a growing family? It might be that you have a new baby, or someone moves into your home. Or maybe the needs of your family are changing as you work from home and your kids need a place to study.
In this case, it might be worth growing your house with your family. There are a few ways to extend your home.
The simplest method might be to convert your loft or basement into a usable space. Depending on your property, you could turn these rooms into a spare bedroom, an office, or even a workshop.
Other options include adding an extension directly to your home, either adding more rooms or making existing rooms larger. Or you can build a garden room or summer house in your backyard, adding much more space and privacy.
