How To Make Your Own Advent Calendar

How To Make Your Own Advent Calendar

Disclosure – this is a collaborative post.

The countdown to Christmas is on! The holidays are fast approaching, and an Advent calendar is always a great way to build excitement and have something to look forward to in the run-up to the big day. Instead of splashing out on an Advent calendar this year (which always seem to get more expensive!), why not make your own? Making your own advent calendar can be a fun project and a way to get creative while saving money. It will also make opening your advent calendar each day a little bit more special. Read on to learn how you can make your own advent calendar this year.

Get A Large Board Or Poster

First, you want to get a large board or poster that will be the centralized display for your advent calendar. A cork board, foam board, or larger poster board will work well. You can decorate the board or poster in a festive design if you wish – a Christmas tree is a popular choice.

Get 24 Small Containers/Envelopes

You will then want to get 24 small containers or envelopes for each day running up to Christmas. You could use small boxes, paper bags, or even envelopes.

Decorate The Containers

Now comes the fun part – decorating each container. How you decorate each piece is entirely up to you, but you might want to consider using typical Christmas imagery as a way to build excitement. This could include things like:

  • Santa Claus
  • Stockings
  • Snowmen
  • Robins
  • Snow
  • Holly

Use Sticky Labels

You will then need to label each container a number each day in the run-up to Christmas. We tried using sticky labels from labelplanet.co.uk for the numbers, which were cheap, and we could create our own festive designs. This can make it quick and easy to create a professional-looking advent calendar with the ability to add personalization.

Prepare The Daily Treats

Next, you will want to prepare the daily treats. You will want something fun each day to enjoy when you open the container, and there are lots of good options. You could fill your containers with:

  • Small chocolates
  • Candy
  • Figurines
  • Jokes
  • Notes
  • Mini decorations
  • Coins

You can find items at places like Amazon, Etsy, and NotOnTheHighStreet.

Attach Containers

It is then a case of attaching each container to your large board or poster. It will depend on your chosen surface, but you could do this with glue, ribbon, or string. You could put them in chronological order or jumble up the sequence to make it more fun trying to find the right container each day.

Display The Calendar

Finally, you want to display the calendar. You will want to hang or display the advent calendar somewhere easily accessible and somewhere that you can see each day to help you get in the festive spirit.

Creating your advent calendar can be a fun, creative project that helps you save money. Having your own calendar will also help to build excitement in the run-up to Christmas as you open up each container and enjoy a treat each day.
