Summer holidays always creep up faster than you expect. Here’s a quick checklist to get yourself and your family ready.
1. Figure Out the Practical Stuff First
Before even thinking about what to pack, get the boring-but-important things out of the way, like:
- Travel insurance, even if you’re not leaving the country
- Passports and ID
- List of emergency contacts
- Medications
2. The Packing List That Actually Works
Try packing a beach bag, travel-day bag and an evening bag. It means less digging around for things early in the morning.
Essentials that always make the cut:
- Reusable water bottles
- A first aid kit
- A couple of “boredom busters” for travel days
- Sun hats that actually stay on
3. Prepping the House Before You Leave
This one’s easy to forget in the holiday excitement, but a few minutes before you shut the front door saves a lot of stress later:
-
- Empty the trash bins
- Unplug anything that doesn’t need to be on
- Ask a neighbor to keep an eye on things
- Double check you locked the back door
4. Keep Everyone’s Expectations Realistic
Not every day of the holiday needs to be jam-packed with activities. Some of the best memories are from the lazy, unplanned days where you end up at the local park or paddling in a stream you found by accident. Building in some slower days means everyone gets to relax.
5. Have a “Just in Case” Plan
Nobody wants to think about things going wrong on holiday, but a little bit of preparation goes a long way. Along with travel insurance, it’s worth knowing:
- Where the nearest hospital or pharmacy is at your destination
- What your insurance actually covers (read the fine print once, not while you’re stressed)
- What to do after an accident, such as a crash or a slip and fall. Having your insurance company or a trusted injury lawyer’s phone number saved in your phone means one less thing to figure out in a stressful moment
Wishing You a Stress-Free Summer
However your family spends the summer holidays, I hope this checklist takes a little bit of the pressure off. A bit of planning now means more time for sandy toes, ice cream, and those chaotic-but-lovely family memories.
What’s on your summer holiday checklist? I’d love to hear your tips in the comments!
