Acne is a common skin condition that affects around 80% of people in the UK at some point in their lives. Characterised by red pimples on the face, active acne refers to the presence of these pimples and lesions on the skin’s surface. Active acne can be very uncomfortable and painful in a lot of cases.

The presence of active acne can even cause emotional distress and low confidence amongst many sufferers. These mental symptoms can be just as debilitating as the physical ones. This is why many people try to prevent their active acne and keep it well controlled.

Reputable skin care clinic The Laser Treatment Clinic offers these following tips to best prevent active acne.

Stick to a Skincare Routine

Maintaining a regular skincare routine is one of the most effective ways in preventing acne. Regularly cleansing your face removes impurities and any acne causing bacteria from the surface of your skin, making inflammation less likely to occur.

It’s recommended to cleanse twice a day with a gentle cleanser when it comes to caring for acne prone skin. After cleansing, pat your skin dry with a clean towel and be careful not to rub as this can irritate your acne more. Apply any over the counter acne treatments you have whilst your skin is clean and dry. Then, follow with some moisturiser and SPF and your skincare is complete.

Stay Hydrated

Being dehydrated is never a good thing, hydrating improves your skin’s appearance and keeps it well balanced. Having dry skin can irritate your acne further, so it’s important to drink 6-8 cups of water a day to prevent an acne breakout.

Don’t Touch Your Face

Your hands are used many times throughout the day, from opening doors to typing on a keyboard, they’re being used a lot!

In between washes your hands are picking up bacteria and it can’t be helped. This is why only touching your face with clean hands is important.

If the bacteria that’s being picked up by your hands gets on your face then it could cause inflammation and irritation of your active acne. Try to keep your hands away from your face if you can help it during the day as it can lead to a buildup of oil on your skin resulting in an unwanted acne breakout.

Limit Sun Exposure

Harmful UV rays from the sun are known to dry out your skin and encourage your sebaceous glands to produce more oil to compensate for this. This irritates your acne and can cause more breakouts. This is why it’s important to limit your exposure to the sun to prevent acne.

Wearing sunscreen when you go outside is also important in preventing acne. On sunny days make sure to wear sunglasses and sunscreen to protect your skin the best you can.
