5 Unexpected Ways You Can Tackle Postpartum Blues

5 Unexpected Ways You Can Tackle Postpartum Blues

Disclosure – this is a collaborative post.

Needless to say, postpartum depression is pretty common right after giving birth, and this can sometimes last a year or even longer. Postpartum life isn’t always the cosy, picture-perfect scenario we see on Instagram. Sometimes, it’s more of a rollercoaster of emotions with dips you never saw coming. Sure, there are some things you should try, such as exercise, as it has a major impact, but that isn’t necessarily the only thing either.

So, with that all said, if you’re finding yourself in one of those dips, know that you’re not alone, and there are small yet surprisingly effective things you can do to help fight postpartum depression. Chances are, these are things you haven’t thought about.

Wear Your Favourite Perfume

This might sound strange, but scent is a powerful thing. When you’re in the thick of nappies, spit-ups, and laundry piles, it’s easy to lose yourself in the monotony. Spritzing on your favourite perfume—even if you’re not going anywhere—can instantly lift your spirits. It’s a subtle reminder that you’re still you, and it can transport you back to pre-baby days when you felt more like your old self. Plus, who doesn’t love smelling fabulous?

Treat Yourself to a Super Soft Pillow Spray

Don’t just spray on yourself, but consider your pillow, too. No, this doesn’t mean you should spray your perfume on it, but some pillow spray instead. So, it’s important to have a calm and very relaxing bedtime routine, and one of the things that should accompany it should be scented. A pillow spray with calming scents like lavender or chamomile can do wonders for your sleep quality.

You could even add some CBD oil to it for an extra calming effect (as there are a lot of benefits to that). And we all know that better sleep (when you can get it) can make a world of difference in how you handle the day ahead. Just a spritz or two before bed, and let those soothing scents help you drift off more peacefully.

Tiny Creative Projects

Does this mean a new hobby? Well, no, as that requires hours of commitment (because, let’s be honest, who has the time?). Instead, focus on tiny, manageable creative projects. Maybe it’s doodling in a notebook for five minutes, snapping a photo of something that makes you smile, or even rearranging a small corner of your home.

These little bursts of creativity can reignite your sense of self and give you a small, satisfying sense of accomplishment amidst the chaos.

The Magic of Tactile Comforts

Now, this one sounds weird, but bear with it. So, there’s something incredibly soothing about the right textures. Try wrapping yourself in the softest blanket you can find or investing in a plush bathrobe. When everything feels overwhelming, tactile comforts can ground you.

Spend a few minutes just enjoying the feeling of something soft against your skin—it’s like giving your nerves a gentle hug. Bonus points if you pair this with a warm cup of tea or hot chocolate.

Curate a Soundtrack for Your Day

Music has an incredible ability to influence our moods. So, why not create a few playlists that match different times of your day? Need energy to get through a tough morning? Pop on something upbeat. Trying to wind down after finally getting the baby to sleep? Go for something calming and mellow. Your daily soundtrack can help you navigate those emotional highs and lows with a bit more grace.
