My children are all starting to get a bit older now and life is changing a little. I’m finding I do have more time to do things for myself, go out more and start having more interests. There’s always an element of sadness here, becoming aware my little ones are growing up. They have passed the baby and toddler phase, all at school and with my eldest at high school, time does feel like it is flying! It’s strange being needed in a bit of a different way – more just to listen and keep her school fund topped up!
Despite this sadness, you are able to start planning more things to do alone or as a couple. My husband and I get trips away most years without the children when are needed and enjoyable and there are other things I would like to do, with a little more time on my hands:
– Take a solo cruise. Solo travel is something I have always wanted to try; the experience of being alone, pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and potentially meeting some new people. So booking a singles cruise is on the bucket list. I also love the idea of waking up in a new destination, exploring and having that option of seeing multiple destinations on one holiday. Likely some amazing food and drink too, so a similar experience to being in a hotel.
– Go hiking more frequently. I love a good mountain walk. Nothing beats the fresh air, the scenery and doing a good bit of exercise. I’ve tried to get the older children into this but there is always an element of moaning or tiredness with children – they limit how far you can go sometimes and the moaning can get a little tiresome! As much as I try to take them, I also enjoy a walk with my husband or with friends.
– Start a new hobby. I love my exercise and have considered starting a new class such as pilates or going back to my pole exercise. Time for myself and also a chance to make some new friends and learn a new skill.
– Take more trips with friends. Now it is easier to leave the children now and then, it does give me the chance to explore a bit more, whether it be somewhere in the UK, or a European City break. There are some places I would love to see, such a parts of Spain, Germany and Scandinavia.
– Complete all the jobs you’ve wanted to do. This maybe something simple like sort the garage out, ranging to having a new bathroom or painting the bedroom. Sometimes it can be so hard to have the time or inclination to spend your weekends or evenings doing DIY when busy with little ones but with some more time, this is possible!
I know it’s strange having a little more time back and being able to focus on house projects, a new hobby or getting away but changes don’t always have to be negative!
Embrace the changes and have some fun!
