Top Tips for Keeping Your Jewellery Safe

When you’ve spent a small fortune on your jewellery collection, it makes sense to keep it safe. It’s not enough to simply buy it and wear it – you need to ensure you’re maintaining it and protecting it against theft, damage and loss.

Whether you’re simply storing it in your home, or you’re taking it with you on your travels, below you’ll discover top tips for keeping your jewellery safe.

Don’t forget about maintenance

In order to keep your expensive jewellery looking like new, you’re going to need to carry out a few basic maintenance tasks.

Different types of jewellery require a different type of maintenance. However, regardless of what type you have, there’s a few general tips you’ll want to follow. Keeping them out of heat and certain types of lighting for example, will help to ensure the jewellery doesn’t fade or become damaged.

Think about it, you don’t want to spend a fortune on high-quality jewellery from a store such as F.Hinds, only to have it fade after being exposed to direct sunlight!

Always store valuable items separately

When it comes to keeping your valuable jewellery safe from theft, it’s important to store them separately. That way, if there is a break in, burglars will be distracted by your general collection, and won’t usually consider you may have more expensive jewellery stored separately.

In terms of where to store it, ideally you’ll want to keep it either in a separate room altogether, or in a hidden location in the same room as the rest of your collection.

Have a photographic library of your collection

If the worst does happen and your jewellery becomes lost or stolen, it’s good to have a photographic library on hand. This should include photos of each piece of jewellery you own, along with descriptions, measurements and noteworthy features. This will really aid the police when it comes to tracking down your stolen or lost goods.

Where you store the photographic library is also important. It’s advisable to store it in a safety deposit box. If you store it with the jewellery, there’s a chance a burglar could steal that too, making it much harder to trace and track down.

If you follow the tips above, your jewellery will be a lot safer, giving you great peace of mind. The more you take care of your jewellery collection, the longer it will last. When you’ve spent a lot of money on your collection, it really pays to ensure you’re looking after it.
