How to Prepare for a Trip to Las Vegas

Las Vegas has very much earned its reputation for being one of the world’s best travel destinations. After all, Sin City offers a little something for everyone. Whether it’s playing games at the world-class casinos, seeing a world-class show, or, yes, eating at a world-class restaurant, it’s a destination that delights no matter how many times you’ve visited.

Still, there’s nothing quite like the first time. If you’re planning a trip to Las Vegas, then this page is for you. We’ll outline some handy tips that’ll have you ready for action once you finally touch down at Harry Reid International Airport.

Choose the Right Time

People from the UK often hear that Las Vegas has year-round sunshine, and assume that they can visit at any time and have a great experience. While it’s true that the sun will likely shine while you’re there, if you go at the wrong time, you might find that the sun is shining a little too much. Temperatures in July and August can routinely exceed 40 degrees, which makes it difficult to plan outdoor activities. It’s best to go in April/May or September/October, which also has the added benefit of having fewer crowds.

Where to Stay

You won’t struggle to find accommodation in Las Vegas — after all, at last count, there were more than 150,000 hotel rooms across the city. However, while repeating visitors might find that staying in a more remote part of Las Vegas will have its merits, if you’re visiting for the first time, stick to The Strip. You’ll spend most of your time in that area anyway. Keep in mind that The Strip is more than four miles long, so try to book a hotel somewhere in the middle unless you want to take taxis everywhere.

Preparing for the Casinos

The casinos of Las Vegas are more than just attractions; to many people, they are Las Vegas. After all, without casinos, there would be no Las Vegas, and some 80% of visitors swing by a casino while they’re in town. No law says you can’t just turn up and play, but you’ll get more experience if you’ve done some preparation before your visit. The easiest way to do that is to refresh your skills, especially if you’re planning on playing a more niche game while in Vegas, such as Omaha poker, which is similar but slightly different to Texas Hold’em, the “standard” poker game. Travellers can play Omaha poker online to ensure they’re ready for the tables when they arrive in Las Vegas. In fact, it can be worthwhile learning how to play Omaha poker even if you usually prefer Texas Hold’em since Omaha tables in Vegas tend to be less busy and a little more relaxed.

Book Your Shows Ahead of Time

Las Vegas is home to some of the world’s best shows, which take place every single night. Given the frequency of shows, many visitors assume that they can just buy tickets when they arrive. However, while that might be fine, it’s also risky. If you have your heart set on seeing a show, especially a popular show such as Mariah Carey or David Copperfield, then book ahead of time — you might regret it if you don’t!

Plan Trips Out of the City

Las Vegas has a lot going for it, so it might sound unusual to read a tip that suggests you leave the city while you’re in town. But there’s a good reason for it; there are plenty of outstanding attractions within easy driving distance of The Strip. At the top of the ‘must-visit’ list is the incomparable Grand Canyon National Park, which is around a four-hour drive. If you’ve only got limited time, then join a helicopter tour to the Grand Canyon. It’ll save you a lot of time, and you’ll also get to enjoy the sight of Sin City all lit up when you head back in the evening.
