How to Choose a Kid’s Present – What I have Learnt as Mum of 3 – AD

choose a kid's present

Before I had children I thought present buying would be really easy for my children and for other people’s children too. I mean how hard can it be? They are children and they surely just want anything! Most children love toys, books, games and there is always something that you can buy. However since I have become a Mum of three very different children, I soon realised this is not the case at all. I also realised buying for other children is not as simple either. This is where Wicked Uncle comes in very handy as they offer brilliant children’s presents for yours and other’s little ones. You can filter gifts by age or style of gift; creativity or adventurer for example. There is so much choice!

When I choose a child’s present now, I really think, as I don’t want it to be a waste of time and something that will never get touched and donated to the charity shop within a few months!

Choose a Kid’s Present – Top Tips

I have learnt a few tips and tricks as a Mother over the last 7 and a half years. Endless children’s parties, gifts for family and friends and picking the right things for my children. I’ve made mistakes and have wasted money! So I thought I would impart some of my wisdom on you.

Ask what they would like or are into

This sounds like the most obvious thing but makes such a difference. I’d love to be able to pick the perfect gift every time but I can’t do this. My eldest has received some lovely gifts over the years but some, just not her thing, usually from parties or when randomly given. My eldest has very different taste in clothes to her younger sister, who would have a complete meltdown if bought anything pink. Even if someone gives me an inclination what they child is into, it really helps! Always worth asking.

Check out parent’s views on plastic toys

Since being a blogger, I have seen views change on plastic toys and the effects they have on the environment. I’m quite happy to review most things but must admit I have been very shocked at how much plastic waste there is. I am now quite vocal about this if writing a review, as some parents are not happy with these types of toys. Ask and check, as there are many alternatives available. I have some friends who really focus on wooden toys only.

Biggest is certainly not always best

I can see a few smiles at this but it really is the case. I am very, very lucky to have space for toys but even my eyes roll if my kids receive something huge. There isn’t always space to store them and some of the best things my kids have had, have been small gifts, such a games and cards.

Think education

I love it when one of the kids get something they can play with or read but doubles up as an educational gift. Playing shouldn’t always be about learning but it’s really a bonus when it does both. My girls have had some amazing memory games or those that challenge their reaction times.

Look at reviews

My husband has drummed this into me a lot but I’ve also learnt this as a blogger. I’ve reviewed some toys for kids that look and sound amazing. However, when I’ve opened them and tested them, there are not worth the money or simply do not work! It is always worth checking this before you buy to avoid some disappointed little ones.

Steer clear of messy gifts

Not all parents and kids love mess. I do enjoy crafting with my kids but I also know some parents who hate it and particularly hate glitter! Also some children don’t like it. My middley used to get really bothered when her hands were dirty too! Unless you have die-hard crafter friends and family with kids, I often don’t go down the messy route.

I’m always careful when gifting messy gifts although some mums I know seem to love the messiest items about. The more glitter etc the better!!!
