Planning those outdoor excursions especially with a group of kids to both encourage and entertain can be draining. It might make you wonder why you’re even bothering. But don’t let that doubt creep in! Experiencing the outdoors with you family is very rewarding and can make some wonderful memories for you all to share. But where do you start with planning an exciting and engaging trip for everyone? Follow our essential guide to figure out a great plan for your outdoor holiday!

Where To Go?
With so many options, making the decision on where to go can be tough. There are lots of decisions to make here so it’s best to sit down with everyone and decide as a team. Giving your kids a level of input into the decision-making process will help to encourage them to go in the first place. Maybe you’ll decide to go camping and hiking in the lake district? Or perhaps you’ll look at getting a cottage in the countryside surrounded by nature? Wherever you choose to go, do it as a team.

What To Take?
Once you’ve decided on a location, you’ll need to plan what you’ll be bringing with you. Identify any unique requirements for your chosen location. If you’re camping, obviously you’re going to need a tent! But you’ll also want to work out whether you’ll be cooking your own food or visiting nearby restaurants and cafes. If you’re cooking out and about, you’ll want a portable gas or electric stove. If you have younger kids that will want to be adventuring and going out on their own, it’s worth investing in some safety gear such as tracking devices for kids. Getting them a watch from Cosmo Together means that you’ll be able to check where your children are using GPS and even call to check in on them.

What To Do?
So what will you be doing? Camping is all well and good, but you can’t just sit in your tent for the whole time! Figure out some great activities to get everyone working together or strengthening some skills. This would be a great opportunity to teach your kids to ride a bike or go fishing. There are so many possibilities. Search the local area for fun family days out so you can visit exciting new places and really make the most of your trip.

For How Long?
Similarly to deciding where to go, people can very rarely agree on how long your holiday should be! Of course, it all depends on the location, school holiday time, work holiday time, and home responsibilities like pets or other family members. When venturing out for an outdoor holiday however, as beginner outdoor adventurers or campers, it’s often recommended that you don’t spend too long away from home-comforts. You’re just increasing the risk of people falling out and feeling miserable. Week-long and fortnight-long outdoor trips should really be reserved for the more experienced of folks and is especially not recommended for kids. Find a good compromise with everyone and don’t overstay your welcome. If people really don’t want to leave just yet, you know you’re on to a winner and they’ll be even more excited for the next trip!
