Breastfeeding Fuel – Strawberry and Raspberry Protein Smoothie

Breastfeeding Fuel – Strawberry and Raspberry Protein Smoothie

Since I have had the little guy and been breastfeeding him I have been really hungry and thirsty. It’s another one of those things you forget about! You do need extra calories and fluid during this time.

I often wake up in the morning starving and a bit headachy, as I’m really thirsty. I end up necking a pint of water as soon as I wake and wanting my breakfast immediately. Hangry is definitely the word!

But what to choose?

I often find I’m fancying not always the healthiest options at the moment and I do want to eat and drink well, whilst I am breastfeeding. Good nutrition is vital and of course the odd slice of cake is fine, I’m sticking to healthy food where I can. Fruit, nuts and yoghurt are my go tos but I like to mix it up.

During the early weeks of breastfeeding this time, a smoothie was my lifesaver and I thought I’d share my recipe for a strawberry and raspberry protein smoothie, that both filled me up and quenched my thirst.

This literally takes a few minutes to make.

Strawberry and Raspberry Protein Smoothie Recipe

Add to a blender:

  • Handful of frozen raspberries
  • Handful of frozen strawberries
  • 2 dessert spoons of strawberry yoghurt (you can have plain but I prefer the flavour)
  • 1 scoop of vanilla whey protein powder
  • Top up with semi-skimmed milk

Raspberries in a blender

Blend and voila!!

I find the more milk I add the less thick the smoothie is (common sense!) I quite like a thick smoothie, I can eat with my straw! I definitely think the scoop of whey protein helps with filling me up too. It’s really tasty and not overly sweet at all, which is perfect.

It’s healthy, quick and filling plus I have mastered the art of doing it one-handed too!
