Troubleshooting Dryer Problems

If you are having problems with your tumble dryer, this article is for you. Below, I briefly explain how to troubleshoot the most common problems and suggest a few fixes.

The dryer will not turn on at all

If when you go to switch on your dryer nothing happens, go to the fuse box, and make sure nothing has tripped. If it has, turn it back on. Then, try your dryer. Should it trip again unplug other appliances to see if one of them is overloading the circuit. If that does not fix the problem, use an extension lead to plug your dryer into a socket on another circuit. Usually, that will work. If it does not test your dryer thermal fuse. You can find out how to do it by clicking the link. Then, buy the parts you need to fix it online.

It is also possible that the problem is an electrical one. For example, one or more of the capacitors may have blown. In theory, you can fix this problem yourself. But in most cases, it is better to let an electrician or appliance repair professional do it for you. It is all too easy to make a mistake with electrics. One that could even lead to your dryer bursting into flames, so it is not worth the risk.

There is no hot air

Sometimes a dryer will appear to be working but will be distributing cold, not hot air around your clothes. Usually, that happens because the thermostat or Thermal Overload Cutout (TOC) has failed. Before you go any further press the reset button. Sometimes you will be lucky and that will solve the problem.

If it does not, use a multimeter to help you to double-check that you do need to order a new thermostat and TOC. This video explains how. It also shows you how to test the fuses, which could be another reason for your dryer not generating hot air.

There is hot air but the clothes are still wet

Clothes taking longer to dry is a sign that the filtering system is not working properly. Clean the filter, check that the ventilation tube, grill, and vent are clear of dust and other debris.

The drum is not turning

The drive belt is an important component. If it snaps or becomes lose the drum will stop turning. It is possible to replace a tumble dryer belt yourself, but it is quite a tricky job, so get a friend or family member to help you.

Maintain your dryer to avoid problems

As you can see troubleshooting and fixing a tumble dryer is not that difficult. But it can be time-consuming and some of the parts are expensive. So, repairing a dryer is something that you want to avoid having to do. Maintaining your dryer properly will help you to do exactly that. As you can see here that is easy to do. You just need to take a few minutes out of your week to complete the simple checks and maintenance tasks covered in that article.
